This profile of California CCRCs is based on information from the Continuing Care Contracts Branch of the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing as of October, 2014.

There are 102 CCRCs in California serving over 25,000 residents with the following characteristics:

  • 74 non-profit CCRCs (72.5%), - only 11 (15%) offer life care contracts*
  • 28 (27.5%) of the 102 CCRCs are for profit communities
  • 9 out of state providers (7 for profits and 2 non profits) operating 20 communities (19.6%)
  • 15 multi-facility providers account for 57 CCRCs (55.8%) – 11 non profits with 39 CCRCs and 4 for profits with 18 CCRCs

    * A life care contract (“Extensive or Type A” contracts) covers all care levels for a standard monthly fee and guarantees care for life, even if the resident’s funds become inadequate to cover the full costs of future services and care. There has been a dramatic decrease in life care contracts due to high and unpredictable health care costs.
