Plum Healthcare Nursing Home Cypress Ridge
Sends Three Residents Packing

Cypress Ridge, a Monterey facility that is part of the Plum Healthcare nursing home chain, was recently cited for shipping three residents off to another nursing home over 200 miles away.  One of the residents had lived in the facility for nearly four years but was given only a few hours’ notice of his transfer.  He was told “if he did not accept the transfer, he would be taken to a hotel where he could stay for a few days . . . and then he would be out on the street.”  The other two residents were given similarly short notice and were crying when they were forced to leave.  When the residents asked to see pictures of the new nursing home they were shown pictures of one facility but then were sent to a different facility.  All three residents were experienced psychological difficulties related to the forced transfer.  Despite the distasteful treatment of three separate residents, the Department of Public Health issued only one class B citation.  The facility was cited for improperly transferring the residents, failing to notify them in writing at least 30 days prior to the transfer, and failing to advise the residents of their rights to appeal.
