These organizations provide legal assistance to people and their legal advocates with legal consultation, downloadable legal documents, listings of LGBT friendly attorneys and advice on how to fight discrimination. Many also promote justice through the litigation of precedent setting cases.
AIDS Legal Referral Panel:
ALRP is the only institution in the San Francisco Bay Area solely dedicated to providing free and low-cost legal assistance and education on virtually any civil matter to persons living with HIV/AIDS.
American Civil Liberties Union LGBT Project:
Fights discrimination through the courts, legislatures and public education. Their website has a full list of active LGBT & AIDS Project Case profiles. Also the ACLU is able to legally assist individuals and offer a list of resources for effective advocacy.
Lambda Legal (Western Regional Office):
Lambda Legal offers a range of resources including a cooperating attorney database for discrimination and harassment cases, contact information for direct service organizations, and literature on specific laws and issues. They pursue impact litigation aimed at achieving full rights for the LGBT community by representing individuals who are experiencing discrimination related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and HIV status.
The Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center Senior Services:
The Center’s Legal Clinic offers one-on-one attorney consultations on a no- or low-cost basis to those who need counsel regarding a wide-range of legal issues, including business, civil rights, consumer, criminal, employment, family, government benefits, immigration, insurance, landlord/tenant issues, personal injury, and wills and estates. If you can afford to pay for an attorney, their State Bar-certified Lawyer Referral Service (LRS#0041) can refer you to an experienced attorney.
National Center for Lesbian Rights:
NCLR provides free legal assistance to LGBT people and their legal advocates, litigates precedent setting cases and conducts community education on LGBT legal issues. NCLR's Legal Information Helpline answers questions about laws affecting LGBT people and can direct them to legal resources or local LGBT-friendly attorneys. National LGBT Bar Association:
Promotes justice in and through the legal profession for the LGBT community. Provides a directory of LGBT law partners and firms to handle discrimination and harassment cases, as well as assistance in estate planning.
Free and affordable legal downloadable documents specifically designed for the LGBT community that include advance directives, medical power of attorney, disposition of remains, and wills and trusts.
Transgender Law Center:
TLC offers legal advice and counsel on medical issues, Medi-Cal and VA Benefit needs as well as assistance with end of life planning. Additionally, they advocate on California state policy issues on behalf of LGBT interests.
