Harrowing 911 Call & Refusal to Perform CPR - National Dialogue Needed?

According to reports, the resident did not have a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order, although that wouldn't have been necessary anyway, since all of the residents are subject to the facility's self-imposed DNR, i.e., the facility's policy was that employees do not attempt CPR on residents of Glenwood's independent living facility, and that is what the staff did - nothing - while the resident lay dying on the dining room floor.

All sorts of ethical and legal issues arise here - including whether CPR should be mandated in all senior living facilities unless the resident choses otherwise; what duty, if any, do medical personnel have to assist; the efficacy of CPR in the first place; and most importantly, the necessity to discuss advance directives, DNRs, etc. with potential residents of all senior communities and facilities.

The 911 tape is very disturbing. Incidents like this have probably happened before in other facilities in other states. But this is the first time such an incident has been captured on tape with such national exposure, and it has horrified citizens all over the country.

We welcome your suggestions as to what can be done to prevent this from happening in the future.
