CANHR co-sponsored bill, SB 272 (Corbett) signed into law

SB 272 protects senior veterans from misleading advertising that uses emblems, insignias, symbols or anything that can be reasonably interpreted or construed as implying any federal military, state military, military veteran, or military or veteran services organization connection, approval, or without their express approval.

This new law was necessary because seniors trust advertisements containing official government symbols. Predators have been using military insignias, emblems, or medallions to mislead veterans into believing that their sales activities are approved or endorsed by the government.

Even though the Veterans Services Organization (VSO) has no charge for assisting veterans in qualifying for the veterans’ benefits, unscrupulous financial predators who pretend to be associated with the VSO have been charging fees and receiving commissions for pushing products and services to qualify seniors for veterans’ benefits. Unfortunately, the senior veterans who become involved with these predators have ended up paying unnecessary fees and purchasing unsuitable financial products.

CANHR was proud to co-sponsor, along with California veteran organizations, this important advancement in senior consumer protection.
