CNN has just released a series of stories about sexual abuse in nursing homes. The main story, “Sick, Dying and Raped in America’s Nursing Homes,” discusses a number of terrible cases and how the vulnerability of residents is sometimes used as an excuse for gross nursing home negligence and unmotivated enforcement agencies. Another story follows the investigation of a serial rapist in a North Carolina nursing home while the daughter of a rape survivor penned a wrenching essay about her family’s experience. While the stories are difficult to read, sexual abuse in long-term care settings needs to be brought into the light of public discourse. These cases should not happen, period.
