New York Times Reports that 94% of Nursing HomesHave Health and Safety Violations


A September 30, 2008 New York Times article reports on a federal study that found 94 percent of U.S. nursing homes had health and safety violations last year. In California, 99 percent of nursing homes were cited.

About 17 percent of nursing homes had deficiencies that caused actual harm or immediate jeopardy to residents. Problems included infected bedsores, medication mistakes, poor nutrition and abuse and neglect of patients.
