OIG Report: One-Third of Nursing Home Residents Are Harmed During Their Stays

A new report from the federal government has found that one-third of Medicare beneficiaries experience an adverse or temporary harm event during their stay in a nursing home. The harmful events included overmedication, falls, bleeding, and infections which led to 1,538 deaths and 3,986 “cascade events” in just one month. Fifty-nine percent of the events were deemed preventable.
