On 7/9/2011 a 61 year old female resident diagnosed with dementia was tied to her wheelchair with a sheet and restraint belt for five hours at night by an employee of the facility. The belt came from the employee’s bag she brought from home. The resident had allegedly walked into another resident’s room that night so she was tied down and drugged with a tranquilizer. While the resident was restrained, two other employees verbally abused and laughed at her.
When another resident found the restrained resident sobbing and questioned the employees, he was told “mind your own business.” One employee stated no one would “believe a resident over a nurse.” All three employees were terminated. The facility was cited for failing to ensure the resident was free from verbal and physical abuse.
