San Francisco, CA – California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) will host a press conference at 11:00 A.M. (PST) on Monday, June 29, 2020 via Zoom to announce a June 30th Day of Action for restoring visitation rights for long term care facility residents who have not seen their family members the past three months.
The harms caused by cutting residents off from visitors have become unbearable. Residents throughout the country are suffering from profound social isolation, frustration, and neglect. The visitation ban was instituted in March and has dragged on, unchanged, despite the deteriorating condition of hundreds of thousands of residents.
CANHR and resident advocates around the country urge policymakers to mandate each resident in-person access to at least one support person visitor. Under our plan, support person visitors would be subject to the same screening and infection control protocols as facility staff members and would be able fill in the gap of direct care, supervision, and love for residents that has been missing in long term care facilities for over 100 days.
CANHR staff will be joined by family members of long term care facility residents and representatives from AARP, and the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long Term Care.
Long term care facility residents, their families, friends, advocates, and care providers are being asked to reach out to federal and state policy makers through social media or email on June 30 to demand an end to the harmful, deadly ban on in-person visitation.
