Almost 1200 U.S. nursing homes, including more than 30 facilities in California, failed to meet an August 13, 2013 federal deadline for installing an automatic sprinkler system to protect residents from fire hazards. Some of the unsafe nursing homes do not have a sprinkler system; others have partial systems. Despite giving nursing homes FIVE YEARS to install automatic sprinkler systems, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is not taking strong steps to enforce compliance or to expose unsafe nursing homes. To alert the public, the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care has established a Hall of Flame to expose the nursing homes that failed to meet the CMS sprinkler requirements.
